For many Sarasota County residents, the Legacy Trail is more than a recreational path—it’s part of everyday life. Stretching from downtown Sarasota to Venice, the paved multi-use trail follows a former railroad corridor and offers more than 20 miles plus extensions of smooth riding with very few road crossings. Along the way you’ll pass shaded hammocks, wetlands, neighborhoods, parks, and some of Sarasota County’s most beautiful natural scenery. The trail includes numerous trailheads with parking, restrooms, water fountains, picnic areas, and places to stop and relax.

One of the most memorable sections is in Nokomis, where the trail crosses Dona Bay and Roberts Bay on elevated bridges. These long spans over the water provide sweeping views of marshes, wildlife, kayakers, and the Intracoastal area, making this one of the most photographed portions of the entire trail.

Families appreciate that many trailheads offer much more than parking. Nokomis Community Park, for example, includes popular pickleball courts, making it easy to combine a morning ride with a few games before or after your workout. Other access points include Payne Park in downtown Sarasota, Osprey Junction, Culverhouse Nature Park, Patriots Park, and the historic Venice Train Depot.

If you don’t own a bicycle—or simply need a tune-up before your ride—you’ll find several convenient bike shops along the route. In Sarasota, Pinnacle Wheel Works, and Legacy Trail Bike and Electric Bike Rentals are all easy to reach from the trail. In Venice, riders can visit Real Bikes, Bicycles International or Big Bam eBikes for rentals, repairs, and cycling accessories.

Once you reach downtown Venice, the adventure doesn’t have to end. The trail seamlessly connects to the eastern section of the Venetian Waterway Park, a beautiful paved path that follows the Intracoastal Waterway south to Shamrock Park. This extension offers additional waterfront scenery, boat traffic, and frequent opportunities to stop at parks or continue exploring Venice by bike.

The Legacy Trail also continues to evolve. Sarasota County has been improving connections throughout the trail system, and recent projects include sections where separate parallel paths have been added to better accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. Long-range plans continue to focus on expanding regional trail connections, including improvements linking the Legacy Trail with additional neighborhoods, parks, and other regional trail systems.

For many people considering a move to Sarasota County, proximity to the Legacy Trail has become a sought-after lifestyle feature. Communities near the trail offer convenient access to walking, running, cycling, parks, and outdoor recreation without ever getting into the car. It’s one more reason Sarasota County continues to attract residents who value an active Florida lifestyle.
